What is LoRaWAN?
LoRaWAN is a low-power wireless network protocol designed specifically for IoT devices. Unlike WiFi, which has limited range, or cellular networks, which consume significant power, LoRaWAN can transmit small amounts of data over distances of several kilometers while consuming very little battery often lasting years without replacement.
How a LoRaWAN-Based Smart Water Meter Works
The sensor reads water volume The meter’s sensor (mechanical, ultrasonic, or electromagnetic) continuously detects the amount of water flowing through.
The LoRa module transmits data The reading is converted into a small data packet and sent by the LoRa module embedded in the meter at set intervals (for example, every 15 minutes to a few hours, depending on configuration).
A gateway captures the signal The signal from the meter is picked up by a LoRaWAN gateway installed at a strategic location — a single gateway can cover hundreds to thousands of meter points within a radius of several kilometers, depending on the terrain.
Data is forwarded to a server/cloud The gateway forwards the data to a network server, then to an IoT platform or dashboard application over the internet.
Data is displayed and analyzed On the dashboard, administrators can view water consumption data, set alert thresholds, and receive automatic reports on anomalies such as leaks or unusual usage.

Despite its strengths, LoRaWAN has limitations, such as small data capacity per transmission (not suitable for large data like video or images) and the need for strategic gateway placement to ensure optimal signal, especially in areas with many physical obstructions like high-rise buildings or underground spaces.
